Nicola Valley Skating Club is a energetic, continuously growing, thriving, fun Club located in Merritt BC. We offer Skate Canada approved, fun, high quality programs. Learn to Skate, Figure Skating & Power skating programs are run out of the Nicola Valley Memorial & Shulus arenas. Receiving Gold and Silver Club Rankings in BC with Skate Canada, and the People's Choice Award for Best Sports Organization. We provide excellent, caring, positive coaching all taught by a local fully qualified Provincial Trained Coach. Skaters excel in every discipline, and receive equal attention. With strong emphasis on skating skills and high standards of excellence, we have received proven results with Regional Championship, and Provincial competition podium finishes. We have a on board Dietitian to consult with dietary needs and concerns for your skater. Our Coach/Program Assistant ratio to skaters is high in CanSkate for maximum efficiency for faster skater skill progression and acquisition. From recreational to High Performance, NVSC has a program to suit your skaters needs, all right here in Merritt. PreCan & CanSkate
Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for
beginners of all ages, 4+. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a
program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You
will earn ribbons, badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental
skating skills. 10 week program
PreCan are 30 min. sessions
CanSkate are 45 min. sessions.
Skaters can choose to skate 1 day or 2 days a week for faster skill progression. (Mondays and Wednesdays)
CanSkate - to be eligible for CanSkate, skaters MUST have passed PreCAn or be able to stand, move forward and backward, make snow, 2ft jump, twist feet, fall down & get up on their own unassisted to transition into CanSkate STAGE 1 and up. All Skaters MUST wear a CSA Approved Hockey or Sport Helmet. (Not expired) No Bike helmets, Bob skates or skate helpers strapped to skates. Absolutley NO use of metal Bars.
Hockey Skates or Figure Skates can be used.

Introductory to Learn how to Figure skate program, it is designed to assist the
skater to transition and bridge from CanSkate to the Skate Canada STARskate
Program. (Jr. STAR/STAR 1)
PreRequisites: STAGE 3 CanSkate badge or Coach Assessed, hockey background (2nd year Novice and up) Figure Skates are a must to learn Figure Skating specific skills at this stage.
Program is 2 days a week for faster skill progression. We highly recommend 2+ days at this level. (Wednesdays & Fridays, with Thursday Skills add on available) Sunday Private lessons only day also available.
Sessions times are 45 min. - 1hr.
10-11 weeks program, plus the opportunity for NVSC Spring and Summer Skating camps

Our Jr. STARskate Program is an environment for learning key fundamental jumps, skating skills and Spins in Figure Skating after the Jr. Academy program. All Discplines of Figure Skating are now introduced here at STAR 1 level. Skate Canada recognized testing is implemented at this level. STAR 1 Dance, Skills and FreeSkate are taught and assessed. Must have passed 2 STAR 1 Assessments prior to moving on to STAR 2 and our STARskate program
Sessions are 45min. - 1hr.

STAR 1-5 & 6-10 & Gold

The STAR 1-5 program offers the best-in-class figure skating curriculum in Canada, targeting athletes looking for a future in the sport. Taught by Skate Canada NCCP coaches, the program introduces participants to the basic figure skating elements to create the foundation for singles, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating.
STARSkate stands for Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition. Skate Canada’s STARSkate program offers opportunities for
skaters to develop figure skating skills in four different disciplines with the option of taking Skate Canada Tests while earning awards and incentives
designed for this group of skaters.
STAR 6-10 This structure builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.
All skaters at this level receive (Semi) or Private lessons based on the days they skate, on top of their progressive, fun group lessons
Sessions are 2 - 2.5 hrs
10-11 weeks program, plus the opportunity for NVSC Spring and Summer Skating camps and the option for Skater Development & seminars.

Powerskate & Skills
Program is a high paced environment for learning key fundamental Hockey skating skills, to
improve your level of play.
CompetitiveSkate
is in the Learn to Compete stage of LTAD and consists of Pre-Juv, Juvenille, Pre-Novice currently at NVSC
All skaters at this level receive Private lessons, and are registered for every sessions in our Figure Skating sessions offered by NVSC on top of their progressive group activities, and Off-Ice training.
Sessions are 2 - 2.5 hrs, and extra privates are available on private bookings on request with our Provincial Coach.
CompetitiveSkate is a program for skaters in singles, pair and ice dance wishing to compete in qualifying events within Skate Canada.
It’s more than just skating!
Skaters enrolled in CompetitiveSkate learn a variety of life skills as they progress up the competitive ladder. These include goal setting, focus, ability to deal with success/failure, time management and principles of fair play and sportsmanship. In addition to the life skill benefits, skaters in this program receive:
- access to provincial and national funding programs (as applicable)
- the opportunity to be selected to Skate Canada’s National Team
- the opportunity to compete at Skate Canada Sectionals, Skate Canada Challenge, and/or the Canadian Figure Skating Championships
- opportunity and potential to be selected to represent Canada internationally
- access to sport science services

NVSC offers Off-Ice Sessions
Our Figure Skaters have weekly access to Off-Ice mental & physical training. Focusing on Balance, Core, Jumping and Spinning Bio-mechanics. Special session events with other Professional trainers and Teachers/Coaches available throughout the year. Such as Lyrical Dance Instruction and curcuit and strength trainers.
NVSC also has Private Lesson Harness training for STAR & Competitive Skaters. We have 2 separate types of Harnesses. Pole Harness & Large Cable Harness.
